This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Despite the odds against my students, they come to school everyday with an eagerness to learn and engage their prior knowledge and experiences. They love to read, but we need more of the books that interest them!
My students are problem-solvers.
They are change-seekers. They are boundary-breakers. They are all minorities, they all live in poverty. We call our class a family and we are constantly teaching each other what support and caring looks like. They attend a neighborhood school that has been turned around after decades of chronic failure. They live in a community where they are afraid to go out at night. None of this stops them.
My Project
We need an extensive collection of high-interest books that they are eager to read! My students check out books from our classroom library so that they can read during school and at home. Having access to books is imperative to becoming better readers. While some of our students are reading at grade level, many need to catch up before moving on to middle school. The books we are requesting are the books that my students are eager to read. They enjoy the books and practice their reading skills at the same time!
These books would make a difference in the lives of all of my students.
The increased access to books they love to read would support them in becoming better readers and better students!
