This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As an elementary librarian in a very high poverty school, obtaining resources that are of interest to all students in grades K-6 is a challenge. Many of my students are reluctant readers, and finding materials to which they can relate is crucial to ensure their success as readers.
Many students have recently shown an interest in learning more about the environment and how they can help to keep it clean.
The book "Thirteen Moons on Turtle's Back" provides an excellent historical example of how humans can negatively impact the world around them. It also explains how people can make a collective effort to reverse the damage done to the environment. I would like to engage students and encourage them to care more about their own community by using this book with every class in the school. Students will then be encouraged to find ways that they can contribute to making the community where they live a better place. Later, the books would be available for students to select and keep during book distributions.
You will make it possible for my students to become more involved in taking care of their own community. Also, by providing the entire school with the benefit of a shared reading experience, students will be encouraged to enjoy reading.
