it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can we read it again!" "Yes! I'm going to library today!"
These are just a few phrases that illustrate the enthusiasm and genuine joy my transitional kindergarten students are beginning to have for reading.
Witnessing the smiles they wear as they read the few books we have in our library over and over, with peers and sometimes parents, is the best part of teaching such a young age.
Living in a low-income neighborhood, my small classroom library is the first opportunity many of my students have to hold books, let alone read them. Through the few months they have been in school, my students have begun to develop a true love of reading. When you walk into my classroom and sit on the floor of my library you will hear laughter, joy, excitement, awe, and the chatter of students sharing their thinking with each other. This is one time of their day that they get to feel the joy of reading, just as anyone else may.
My Project
Imagine being curled up with your favorite book, turning page after page and not wanting to put it down. Imagine the feeling of excitement when you meet someone who read the same book and you can finally share all of your joy, awe, and feelings about this book. Imagine being swept up in a new book, you now unexpectedly love.
This project will support the development of a true love of reading, in each of my TK students.
Through the addition of decodable fiction and nonfiction texts students will be able to explore new worlds and increase their confidence in their reading abilities. They will practice the foundational reading skills I have taught them independently and share them with their families when they borrow these books from the library.
The furniture in this project will allow me to create an inviting world of books that students will crave. Students will have their choice of flexible seating options, that support their energetic bodies in focusing on the books they enjoy. By creating this space to foster a love and joy of reading, we are setting up these students for success in all of their future endeavors. I can only imagine what their futures will hold because they developed a love for literature.
