My Project

My students are incredible 7th graders who are kind, respectful, hardworking, and excellent. They are incredible examples to me, to those around them, and are the future leaders of our community, country, and world.

For my students, I would like to build a classroom library to increase their love of literacy and the chances that they will become lifelong readers.

For the last two years, I have been studying the importance of student choice when it comes to literacy. Reading is a critical life skill and since COVID-19, many students have fallen behind in their reading skills. When students love to read, they naturally increase their vocabulary, comprehension, analytical skills, and writing skills. Students are then able to apply these skills to any reading material they may encounter during their education and throughout life.

Our school does not have a library and students do not have access to a computer in my classroom for informational texts on a daily basis. I have slowly been building my classroom library and students have been able to read from a book they enjoy every day during bellwork and then as an early finisher. Students complete analysis on the books they are reading with projects. They then transfer these skills to the assigned class readings. Many students have read more books this year than they would have on their own. Building a class library would give my students more access to books which would increase their love of reading and the chances that they will become lifelong readers.
