Help me give my students books (Pete the Cat and the Cool Caterpillar) and materials that will engage them in continued learning while schools are closed.
The pre-k students at my school come from a wide, socioeconomic range with many of the students having experienced much stress and trauma in their lives. A large percentage of our students experience food insecurity and unstable living situations and have limited exposure to books outside of the school environment. Many have delays in their language development as well as in their pre-reading and cognitive skills. With the school's indefinite closure, due to the Covid-19 virus, these children are likely lacking the stimulation that they need in order to continue developing these skills.
Our teachers want to provide opportunities for distance learning through literacy.
Our plan is to offer thematic learning through books, along with easy to do, follow up activities that young children can complete with their families. This will help provide structure in their day, engagement with family members and continue development of necessary skills.
Our preschoolers are inquisitive and open-minded. They are eager to learn, share and try new things. We hope that they find these books and activities engaging, and that they can continue to feel connected to school and their teachers during these troubling times.
My Project
Even though our school is closed indefinitely, due to Covid-19, our teachers want to insure that our students continue learning and building solid foundation skills for their future. This is especially critical for those of our students who come to us with delays in language and learning.
By providing age level books that can be read at home, along with suggestions and materials for easy follow up activities, we aim to engage children and their families in continued learning.
We want families to be a part of their child's learning as they are their child's first teacher! We want to provide activities that will unplug students and get them outside, moving and learning.
