Help me give my students novels like The Blind Assassin, The Color Purple, Beloved, and The Memory Keeper's Daughter, which are referenced on the AP Literature and Composition exam. These novels are critical to their success.
I teach AP Literature and Composition to two groups of juniors and seniors who stand out among the other students at our high school.
These students are incredibly driven, intelligent, and inquisitive.
They are not afraid to take on the challenge of a rigorous course, and they want to be the best students possible by pushing themselves to not only try their best, but also learn from their experiences in this classroom. Because they sign up for this class, they can earn college credit. This inspires them to stay very focused and work incredibly hard.
My Project
These novels would specifically go to my AP Literature and Composition class. I want my students to be able to participate in literature circles, and I want them to have a variety of novels to choose from. Then, students will be able to have the freedom to choose a novel from this list and work in groups to really analyze and discuss it. Each novel I picked actually comes from a recommended list for AP Literature and Composition. These novels have literary merit; these are just a few of the novels on the list that I have chosen.
The variety of novels will allow my students to not only flourish intellectually but also creatively as they really learn to dig deeper into these novels while working collaboratively with other students.
We will be creating a classroom setting much like a college class, and that will ultimately prepare them for the exam and their future. Right now, they have to pay for the novel themselves or use one from the library. Because they truly benefit from annotating the text, a library option isn't always the best.
