Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a language teacher, I am always looking for ways to get my students reading authentic texts in the target language. I especially look for ways to get them engaged and excited to read in the target language. After reading an excerpt from this book in class, my students were shocked that we did not get to find out what happens next in the story. I watched as they all flipped the page to continue reading. I watched their jaws drop.

At this moment, I realized that we needed this book.

A student even voiced her desire to keep reading and asked me to find the book for us! My goal is to use the novel "Senderos Fronterizos" to engage students in reading about the lives of others in Spanish.

My students are nearly all heritage or native speakers of Spanish. However, they do not often read novels in Spanish, but instead in English. Through this gift, I am hopeful they will grow their love for reading and for reading in Spanish.
