Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to my 1st grade class of wonder, learning, imagination, and kindness! We love to learn, and grow together. My class is a diverse class of learners. Some come from homes where Spanish is their primary language. I also have a wide range of educational levels with many students falling below grade level.
I teach in Camden, NJ- a city infamous for crime and poverty.
Despite these challenges, my students come to school every day ready to learn. They are eager to try new things and to soak in as much knowledge as they can. I am always looking for ways to enhance their learning. Sometimes it is difficult to get some items we need due to budget restraints. I do my best to make sure that we have the basics but would love to give my students the same materials and opportunities that their suburban peers have access to.
My Project
Every day my students come to school eager to learn. They love math and love to work in groups. Every day we have guided math groups. Typically, I meet with 3 groups each day for math. When students are not in a group with me, they are working in groups with their peers. Students are allowed to sit in different areas of the room during this time but unfortunately their seating options are currently limited to either their desks or the rug. I would love to be able to provide some flexible seating options for when they are working in their math groups.
Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups.
Studies have shown that having various flexible seating options can stimulate students’ sense of touch . This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating also allows students to choose where they work and with whom. I would love for my students to experience the benefits of flexible seating.
