My Students

My students are 6th, 7th and 8th graders who come from a variety of home environments and experience a stressful 7-8 period school day. As middle school students, they are learning how to self-regulate and to monitor their social and emotional well-being. This is a life skill that is useful to all, but my students are just learning and this project has the potential to impact that growth and their development in a huge way. Some of my students live below poverty level and are providing for their families in many ways. Others come from middle class families with 2 working parents and spend time alone. Some have stressful home lives and school lives and some are just plain fun-loving middle school kids. They will all benefit from the experience of learning to center oneself and manage their feelings with breath, meditation and yoga.

My Project

These materials are for students to learn basic meditation and yoga practices to help students learn self-regulation and stress management techniques. These yoga supplies will be used in a class that occurs after lunch four times a week. After lunch is notoriously a difficult time for most middle school students. In fact, most behavior problems occur in classes after lunch. These materials will be used to transform my classroom into a meditation and yoga studio daily where students will learn the importance and impact of yoga and meditation, the history and benefits of poses and meditations, set personal goals for self-regulation of feelings and breath, and stretch the mind...or lotus mattitude!
