Our students in the Mild Cognitively Impaired program normally start the day off very tired, frustrated and frequently come in late. Due to their impairments, we need to focus on practicing many skills in a variety of ways. Our favorite quote when they enter the room is this one: "The expert in anything was once a beginner."
Our school is in an urban setting, and families experience many difficulties in buying essentials for daily living.
We look at our "class store" as a very positive way to reinforce the student behavior and specific skills they may need to focus on to become more independent people in society. They work towards earning money from two CI teachers a week and then use the money to purchase items in the store. This aligns precisely with our more functional curriculum.
My Project
One area my students struggle a great deal with is staying focused and drowning out other sounds in the classroom. These headphones will be helpful for students to use in daily working activities. They focus much better with background noise when they are working.
The donation of headphones for this project will also help an online educational program we use to improve reading, writing and math skills on a weekly basis.
The students have directions or answer options read to them.
We will need the headphones as incentive in our behavior program so students can "purchase" with classroom money and use for personal reasons.
