Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are some of the most hard working students in our school.
All of my students are special education students- they are students with Autism, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Language Disabilities or Other Health Impairments.
These disabilities make learning more difficult for them. In addition, over 65% of my students are English Language Learners– many of these students are still learning how to speak English. Our school has the highest Hispanic population in the state. Our school also qualifies as a Title One School: over 85% of our students live in poverty and receive free/reduced lunch. Despite all of these obstacles, these students are eager to come to school each day. They always try their best and never give up when they face hardships. The students at this school are really special, and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make teaching them such a joy.
My Project
Our school is teaching students to make good choices. This carries over into reading where our students are told to make good choices when picking a book. A good choice book is a book that they are able to read and understand. This is hard for my students to do in the classroom because they are reading several grade levels below the other students. They do not have many books that would be considered good choices in their classroom. My students need lower-level books that they can take with them to the classroom and use to complete on-grade level assignments during their Daily 5 ELA lessons. This will be so beneficial because now they will be able to understand what they are reading. This will allow them to apply it and complete on-grade level assignments- something that is usually very hard for them due to the higher-level books in the classrooms.
