Help me give my students the opportunity to read books that are designed around their own unique interest and needs. They need books that they can identify with and more importantly, see themselves in.
I teach a class designed for students with severe behavioral needs, with no two days ever alike. My students experience a wide of environmental factors, such as homelessness. These issues in no way define who they are but rather just something that they are experiencing right now. This is not without its challenges, yet each day allows my students new opportunities to learn and grow. My class is a bundle of excited energy that houses a deep desire to learn. Learn they will! My students are amazingly awesome students, from third to fifth grade in a self-contained special education classroom that promotes inclusions whenever possible.
They are fun and energetic.
My students may be faced with issues of homelessness and poverty, but they are not defined by their disability nor their homelessness, but rather they are defined by the strength of their character. They are truly like any other student, each with their own hopes and dreams. Each one has their own unique personality, and together we make up an awe-inspiring class that has truly turned our school into something more. My students are creative, inspiring and delightful. Together, my students have created a special community of learning.
My Project
Reading is truly a portal to another universe. A way in which to get lost in the possibilities of another world and another way of being. My students need books that will support their literacy growth, as well as their social-emotional growth. More importantly, my students need books that they can fully engage in and are truly interested in. They need to see themselves in the books we have in the classroom so that they will see the importance of reading.
My students lean best when they are engaged in activities that cater to who they are as a person.
They seldom see themselves in the books we currently have on hand and would truly benefit from a library full of books that they can truly immerse themselves in. My students deserve the best. They deserve to find books that they can identify with. My students are amazing and truly love our independent reading time, which can be made better through the introduction of books they truly like.
