My students need a class set of books for a unit on family support and class set of books for a unit on positive values; they need colored paper for interactive booklets.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My advisory class is all about translating literacy and numeracy into action. I want students to be exposed to rigorous and engaging texts that inspire their humanity. The quote of the year is, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" -MLK.
The students at my school are in a low-income, high risk environment.
One goal is to prepare student for a career when they graduate, but I want to make sure they are prepared to go to college as well. When asked who they know that went to college besides a teacher, only 25% of students were able to say that they had a family member who was or had been in college. Students come from all kinds of backgrounds: foster care, single family homes, or living with their grandparents. Students have family members with addictions, who are in jail, or have been killed. The idea of "college ready" seems far off for some of these students, but I know that with the correct materials, they can and will be successful. I don't like to label them as "at-risk" students. Instead I think of them as "at-promise" students; each one has promise and a future.
My Project
Students will read the books as a whole class for each semester. Students will respond to prompts through writing, class discussion, and small group activities. Character analysis, theme, setting, tone, and perspective are a few aspects of the books that they will interpret. Students will write an essay and create a project. They will present their poster and essay to the class. Students will use the texts as a springboard to self analysis about their family experiences and the impact it has on them individually.
This will be a powerful experience for the class as they develop their idea of a family and cultural legacy and how that has impacted their life.
Students will recognize what they are given from their family and how it affects what they want. Students will consider what they want their legacy to be. The colored paper will be used for a graphic organizer that is engaging and colorful.
