Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a first grade Spanish dual language class. The students in my class are all in the process of becoming bilingual, bi-cultural and bi-literate. Many of these students come from low income homes, 70% of them receive free and reduced lunch. Though they face many adverse situations in their home life they have an unwavering interest in leaning. Their parents are equally enthusiastic and supportive of their education but have limited resources at home. I seek to provide a classroom environment that has high expectations but that also provides the comfort and care that they need.
My Project
Nightly reading is a must for the students in my classroom. This is an unwavering expectation that I have of them.
With high expectations comes the need for me to provide them with the tools to meet those expectations.
Since the students in my class lack access to grade appropriate text at home, especially in Spanish, I am seeking funds to take care of this need.
I have an open book checkout system in my class. Students are allowed to take books home to read with their parents each night, no fancy checkout system, no penalties for lost, damaged or forgotten items.
The items from this grant will be used to create a flexible seating option with floor seats for students to read anywhere they prefer while in the classroom. The grant also provides a good selection of grade appropriate books in Spanish for the Students to enjoy reading at home or in class.
