Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like being little and exploring the world around you with all your senses? My preschool students with special needs love to play and discover, but they also have many challenges with accessing learning due to the severe nature of their disabilities.
The preschoolers with special needs in my class range from 3 years old to 5 years old.
All of the children in my class have severe, multiple disabilities, including vision impairments, orthopedic impairments, cognitive delays, and sensory impairments. Their disabilities, especially their vision impairments, make it so important for them to have sensory materials with a variety of different textures, so that they can learn through senses besides just vision, especially the sense of touch.
My students live in a low socioeconomic neighborhood in California. Students come from low-income families and 100% of our students participate in the free lunch program.
I want to help my students use all their senses to learn with hands-on, motivating activities!
My Project
With your help, my students will be able to have fun exploring materials using all their senses, with a focus on the sense of touch. For example, they will be able to finger paint; model with special clays; explore and play with different types of sand; manipulate differently textured squares; and blow and pop bubbles. The most exciting opportunity they will have is to move their whole bodies in a safe, plushy ball pit! This is especially important for them because movement is so challenging for them with their orthopedic impairments. The ball pit will provide a fun, motivating space for them to work on their gross motor skills. These materials lend themselves to both independent and group play. They will be enjoyed by my students as well as the preschool students in the classroom next door, with whom we integrate daily for several activities!
Your donations to this project will help students with severe and multiple special needs to learn through exploration using their senses of touch, sight, and hearing, in fun and motivating ways.
