Loose Parts to Help Us Create!

My Students

My students are an amazing group of three and four-year-olds with special needs. We are an instructional, or self-contained, preschool classroom, and all of my students have moderate to severe disabilities. They vary widely in their ability level but it is amazing to see them interact with one another. Our classroom is filled with children of many different races and socioeconomic backgrounds, but they all play and learn together every day.

Many of my students are nonverbal and the rest have limited language abilities and, because of this, exposure to academic skills through play is especially important.

We spend our day working on language development, fine motor skills, and social skills as well as typical preschool academics. All of my students struggle with one or more of these areas, but they all try their best and work to make gains, both big and small, in everything they do!

My Project

As a Reggio Emilia inspired school, we believe that the student should lead their own learning. In order to facilitate this, we set up the classroom as the “third teacher” through the use of natural, open-ended materials that encourage independent exploration and learning. One of the ways we do this is by providing loose parts which are small materials that can be used in an infinite number of ways.

These types of materials allow children to build, sort, arrange, create- anything they can imagine!

Your donation will help us provide a huge number of new materials such as rings, coins, honeycombs, mushrooms, eggs, raindrops, trees, stones, and more in a rainbow of different colors! Students will be able to use these items creatively all while learning at the same time!
