When my daughter was young, I gave her a potholder making kit; and for the next two Christmases, every friend and relative received a colorful potholder. Her enthusiasm for this handicraft encouraged me to provide the same opportunity to my first grade students, 33% of whom qualify for the free lunch program and 27% of whom are learning English as a second language. Last year, through a generous donor, we received sturdy potholder kits which we turned into lovely gifts. For next year's class, I am requesting enough bags of cotton loops to make at least two potholders for each child, many of whom reside in two homes. Weaving teaches children pattern development, artistic expression, patience, perseverance, and fine motor skills. It also allows them to experience the satisfaction from completing a project that garners genuine praise and admiration, instead of a mechanical recitation of "good job." Finally, handicrafts give them an alternative to electronic games and toys. I would not have believed that a child would actually choose a time-honored pastime until a 15 year old put down his Gameboy and asked me to teach him to knit. Thank you for reading my proposal.
