This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a wonderful group of 2nd graders. They attend an urban school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. The students come from many different backgrounds, cultures, and face many different challenges in their day to day lives.
There are many single income families; families that are receiving assistance in one form or another, and families that are or were homeless at one time.
Regardless of the challenges these students face, they always come to school with smiles on their faces. They are eager to learn and when given an even playing field, they are capable of great things! I want to help even the field for them and their education.
My Project
The hair brushes, combs, and hair ties I am requesting will be used throughout my school by students in all grades and all classes to help them be prepared to focus on their learning and not simple things like their appearance. Some of our students come to school without having had the time or help to brush their hair or arrange it so they are able to see easily. The supplies will be kept in the office for the students to who need them and assistance with them.
Today's students come to school with so many challenges already, one as simple as brushed and neat hair should not affect their learning.
It is unfortunate that this is a need for some students, but for some the task is left for them to do and they are too young to handle the task properly For others, no one is home, up to help them or even remind them that this simple task needs to be done. Once they have come to school they realize that they need help and look to us for assistance. This simple project will make their day much easier and in turn they can focus all their energy on their learning.
