This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever gotten a paper cut? It hurts doesn't it for such a small, almost invisible cut. My kindergarten class desperately needs construction paper! Last year I was told we were out of white construction paper and I still had over a month of school left to teach! Now that was painful!
I have a class of 28 energetic kindergarten students who love to learn and keep me on my toes!
These students attend a wonderful magnet school that believes in teaching patriotism, a love of learning, and children being children, not mini adults. During the past 4 weeks of our new school year, my students have shown such a love of artistic projects. Many have never even painted with water colors! My fear is with tighter budgets, we will run out of supplies even earlier this year!
My Project
You might question why I am asking for such a simple thing. I can only provide you with a glimpse of what I see as a teacher. When the students are learning sight words and finally understand that they help to make a sentence, nothing is better than to tell them they can go get a piece of white construction paper. They get to write their sentence down and then paint or color an illustration. Eventually that sentence will turn into two or three sentences and then they get the privilege of painting a book cover. This paper provides an exciting opportunity for the child to express themselves. It is truly a motivator! Who needs a treasure box...they would rather do an art project!
Nothing is worse than being told that supplies are limited when you know they will help your student become an well rounded individual.
I know that as a teacher I spend so much of my own money to provide these opportunities for my students. Helping our class out would take the "sting" out of our budget! That is why I would welcome the opportunity to get a paper cut...if only we had the paper! :)
