Do you remember being read aloud to by your parents, grandparents, or other adults in your life? Many of the students at my school do not get the chance to experience this wonderful opportunity.
I am the instructional specialist at a rural school in North Carolina.
We have wonderful students who are loving, kind, and respectful. They love school and come with a smile on their face every morning and leave with a smile each afternoon. What makes this more amazing is knowing that over 90% of my school is on free and reduced lunch. Jobs have left our county and families are faced with hard decisions. The parents of this community love their children, but time is spent trying to earn money and reading aloud to their child has to take a back seat. Also, about one-third of our population is Hispanic so many of their parents can't read English.
My Project
I have requested "Playaways" from Barnes and Noble. The "Playaways" are similar to books on tape. The "Playaways" look like MP3 players so the students look very "cool" while listening to the book! I have chosen books that would be appropriate for our Kindergarten and First graders and the books to go along with the "Playaways" are in our library. Students would be able to take the "Playaways" home and listen to them at night or utilize them in stations in the classroom.
Every educator knows the importance of children having the opportunity to have someone read aloud to them.
I want students to be able to take the "Playaways" home and even though the parents may not be able to read aloud to them, they will still have the opportunity to hear the books.
