Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

While in college I read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The Novel opened up my eyes to literature. It allowed me to see myself in the novel. As a teacher of 7th and 8th graders in the Pilsen community I would greatly like to make this book part of my curriculum. I would like to have the students read and analyze the book. The author grew up in the Pilsen community and is of Mexican American decent. In the novel she creates these characters that can easily become an example of my students or someone they care about. The main character sets goals, and shares her struggle to make her dreams come true. I personally know the importance of goal setting and the hard work that it requires to make them come true. I would love to have my students relate to literature, and read to see their culture and community come to life in the novel. I teach at a Chicago Public School in a primarily Mexican American community. I have 30 students, 10 7th and 20 8th graders. I teach Reading, Math, Social Science, Science and Health. In my classroom I have over 90 percent of my students qualify for free lunch. I would ideally like a class set of The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. I will develop a reading unit for the book on my own. While teaching to my students I love finding ways in which they can relate to the material. It makes the learning meaningful and enjoyable. I know that this novel will help them relate to the literature and in turn enjoy reading. Learning should be enjoyable and meaningful, and I know that with this novel I can achieve both objectives.
