Each day in my classroom is a new adventure. I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of students, ages eight to twelve, with a varying range of special needs. My students face challenges in the areas of cognition, speech, motor, visual, hearing, social and/or behavioral skills. Many are also directly impacted by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism or sensory processing disorders. This influences how they interpret and interact with the world around them. Their unique viewpoint has changed who I am as both a teacher and a parent.
My students challenge me to provide them with access to meaningful experiences and curriculum that will allow them to grow as future world citizens.
My students inspire and guide my classroom teams as we work together to learn academic, social and life skills.
My Project
With 4 grades served (2nd-5th), our classroom is a constant hum of activity. We continually weave together academic, social, speech, and self-help skills. The ultimate goal of everything we teach is generalized independence or the ability to perform the skill across a variety of settings with different materials.
The incorporation of early academic folder games, fine motor tasks, and self-dressing boards will assist with increasing generalized independence.
The materials requested will directly promote the overall goal of our specialized instruction. Self dressing boards will practice the key skills of buttoning, zipping, snapping, lacing, buckling, and tying. Fine motor sorting and placement games will increase finger dexterity, strength, and attention-to-task. Finally, academic file folders that focus on early English Language Arts (ELA) and Numeracy skills will promote independent skill practice and task completion. All of the activities listed above will promote work pride and appreciation of accomplishment.
