Do you remember having a fabulous idea for a school project but just did not have the means to afford the art supplies needed? This happens all the time in my classroom. I love to incorporate art within the content areas whether it is creating tessellations in math or galaxy models in science.
The more my students experience hands-on activities, the more in-depth their learning and connections with the real world will increase.
My 7th and 8th graders consist of 103 actively engaged students in a rural high poverty area. This talented group of kids is made up of resource, GT, and the economically disadvantaged. The purchase of art supplies will push my students' interest and learning beyond the textbook and into the art world. As they study their math and science, they will see that design and art is everywhere around them. They can utilize the art supplies when creating many of the activities we need to do in math and science.
My Project
With this project I want my students to recognize how great the connection is between art and math. This will be accomplished through a series of activities in both the math and science classroom. Elements of design will be used to create visually captivating displays using the embellishments, paper and lettering. Analyzing color through the study of the electromagnetic spectrum in science will utilize gemstones and posters. Creating 3-D models of the Milky Way or an atom will utilize the Styrofoam balls, cardboard circles, glitter, beads, pom poms and more. These are just a few of the many activities my students will do incorporating art within the subject areas.
Learning the art of presentation is such a valuable skill for the future. Whether it is an architect drawing blue prints and making models or a computer programmer creating graphics for the latest game, math and art are connected. So these school projects are the foundations being built for the future.
In order for my students to have the opportunity to explore their artist side within the subjects areas of math and science, we need supplies.
We need many supplies so the students have options and choices. The artistic skills developed with these activities will help them in the future with whatever they decide to do. Please think of you donation as a donation to my students future. Thank you!
