Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth grade students enjoy hands-on learning and love asking questions! My students come from a low-income neighborhood and 95% of the school qualifies for free lunches. Science gives them an opportunity to try new ideas and use problem solving skills in a realistic way. They look forward to this part of the day because it allows them to work with their peers on projects, often outside.
My students aspire to be the inventors, scientists, doctors and engineers of the future!
Many live with one parent or grandparents. Few have family members that have attended college. But our school hopes to change that statistic. As a No Excuses University affiliated school, we aim to have every student leave on track to attend college. Beginning in Kindergarten, students are introduced to college vocabulary and ideals, and are instilled with the belief that college is not just the dream, it is the goal.
My Project
My 4th grade students love science, working in groups, and going outside to explore and experiment. They study a variety of habitats throughout the year as one of their science standards. The shepherd hooks will be used to hang the bird feeders we had donated for our bird feeding station. The bird field guides will help students learn to use a key to identify birds. They will also understand how birds are classified and begin to understand adaptations birds have for different environments. The tote will be used to store our bird feed.
Having these resources will allow the 4th graders to have a more personal, focused interaction with the natural world.
Studies show that time outside helps focus and calm students for more attentive learning indoors. Most of my students spend time away from school watching TV, playing video games, and using social media. These materials would help reconnect students with the wonders of nature. I would like this bird feeding station to become the first step in my goal of creating an outdoor classroom for our school.
