I teach 150 middle schoolers (7th and 8th graders) in my building per semester. They have chosen to take technology as an elective. This group includes a wide variety of students, from those identified as gifted and talented, to students identified as special education students who need support with an individual education plan. My experience with them has taught me that they think they are "too cool for school" and usually have to be coerced into learning. Once their interest is piqued, they never cease to amaze me with their ability to learn. They are digital natives and can usually teach me a thing or two.
My students want their education to be relevant and mirror real-life experiences.
I want to give them the opportunity to shine. I want to support all the needs of my students. Together, we are a most excellent team.
My Project
By the time students reach my technology class, assigning dioramas as projects is boring; they've done it so many times before. Such an assignment elicits groans and relatively few completed, uncreative products. I want my students to create dioramas that will be exciting and valuable to their learning.
With this requested Structure Sensor camera, we'll be able to 3D scan students and print actual miniatures of each other!
Using our 3D printer, students will be able to put themselves and their friends into their projects. Imagine the excitement of having an action figure of yourself! My students will be creating dollhouses for our preschool partners. We will cut the walls and roof pieces using our laser cutter and then design furniture using our 3D printer. Finally, we will scan our partners and print them as action figures to play "house".
