My students are very important to me because this is their first time coming to school. Many of them have been home since birth, so I have an opportunity to help them explore their world through the eyes of being an author and illustrator. Most of my students do not own books and the only books they see are at school.
My students are loving, curious and always willing to explore new things.
My classroom provides support for students who are ESL, at risk, and children with special needs where they feel important and special. From the moment they walk into the classroom to the end of the day, I want the students to know that they are valued and cherish and most importantly loved. I want them to know that reading can open so many doors for them. The circumstances and the obstacles they face on a daily basis tells them that they will never be nothing, they are worthless so don't even try. I want them to have every opportunity that anyone else has, and that is a chance to SUCCEED. Success for them is reading, learning new vocabulary, retelling stories and understanding what the story.
My Project
When you were younger, Did you ever have a favorite book that you wanted to read all the time? Well, that is the feeling and experience I want to give my students. I want them to enjoy reading. I want them to understand that reading can be their escape and not their hinderance. I want to give my students a treasure with the book "Oh, The Places You Will Go!". Dr. Seuss books' is every person, big or small favorite author. Every person can find a Dr. Seuss book that was and is their favorite.
Most of my students have daily challenges that they must overcome from Language barriers, special needs or dealing with poverty.
When we go into their homes for visits, books are not a necessity. Survival at times is their love language. I want reading to be their new language. I want them to open a book and emerge themselves within the story. I want the stories they read to make them come alive and believe that they can become anything they want. Oh, The Places You Will Go! can do that for my students. The donation of the book Oh, The Places You Will Go! will show my students that someone loves reading as much as they do. The book can take them on a new journey.
