Look at That: Experiencing Caterpillars to Butterflies in Kindergarten
My students need a caterpillar to butterfly learning set, including a butterfly nursery (with live caterpillars), life cycle models and related read-aloud books, so they can experience the life cycle of a butterfly.
Students in my kindergarten classroom come to school excited about learning. Many of my students come from low-income families, and all the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. This background can mean that students’ families can not afford to purchase needed school supplies.
My students deserve to receive the best education possible, so they are able to succeed in school and in life.
These boys and girls have such awesome attitudes, and they try their best every day!
My Project
My kindergarten students learn best by experiencing concepts first hand, through hands-on projects. When they can see, touch, hear and feel something, the concepts come to life and they develop a much deeper understanding of what they are learning. My students will participate in a life cycles unit, where they will learn about the life cycles of various animals and insects.
I am requesting materials that will specifically help my students experience the life cycle of a butterfly, including a butterfly nursery (with live caterpillars) and life cycle models that they can hold and examine.
My students will greatly enjoy becoming caterpillar "mommies and daddies" and will have a first-hand experience, as they watch their caterpillars change into butterflies. Students will learn so much by being able to touch and talk about the life cycle models, that I am requesting. They will be challenged to place the models, in order, to show the life cycle of a butterfly. My students love to hear books read aloud, and the wonderful read aloud books that I have requested, will provide information about the life cycle of a butterfly. They will use this information to act out the life cycle of a butterfly, complete with costumes, which they will design themselves. After completing this experience, my students will release the butterflies from their butterfly nursery, outside of the school, to continue the cycle of life.
Thank you for taking the time to read my project idea!
