What a wonderful class to work with! My class contains 17 students who are between 7 and 8 years old. They come from various backgrounds such as Hispanic, Asian, African American, Caucasian, Native American, etc. Their academic and developmental abilities also vary widely, from a group of children with learning disability to another set of learners who are advanced or above grade level. I do have my shy children and those with Asperger's Syndrome one too.
Second grade students are still learning proper ways to work with one another. They at times have difficulty understanding their friends' feelings. My special needs children lack the social skills and behaviors to interact with others. My timid students have hard times speaking up in class and share their ideas and opinions.
Therefore, I would like to use puppets and theater arts to teach empathy, social skills, oratory skills and many more to these needy kids. In drama, children learn a wide range of appropriate ways to communicate their feelings and learn to read others' feelings. My Asperger's children can learn those subtle cues that we all give away when we are interacting with someone else. It may mean a mannerism, or understanding that someone is angry even when they say they are not such as their lips are tightened in a line, arms are folded across the chest.
In learning drama, children are learning the important quality of empathy. It allows for them to experience how someone else thinks and acts. Drama also works to promote students' imagination. Imagination is one of life's essential ingredients for success.
So, by giving the students a place to use their imagination even in the most crowded learning environment would help them to succeed their goals. You will make it possible for my students to have a tool to overcome their hardships with oral, social, and empathy skills.
