This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are awesome. They come from a low socioeconomic backgrounds and a good number of their parents do not value education, but in their hearts, they are amazing human beings that will do anything for you. Handfuls of our students walk to school because they live in the community surrounding the school.
Sports is my passion; I have played softball since I was five years old, and I want to pass on that love for the sport that I have to future generations of young players.
Some athletes come to practice with inappropriate gear and clothing, and that's one of the first tools to have to be a successful athlete.
My Project
This is my third year coaching softball at my school, and each year we piece together "new" equipment for our girls to have. We are short on gloves every year, have only a couple of bats to go around, helmets that don't fit or barely fit, and we scramble around to find proper equipment.
It's not fair to our athletes who can't afford to have the equipment they need to be successful in the game; they deserve to have the right equipment.
Each of the girls will have a bat bag to put their things in for each game, so things won't get damaged or lost. Different sized helmets will ensure that our girls have a helmet that fits when they go up to bat. Various bats of different sizes will allow the girls to find a bat that they are comfortable with swinging that is not to light or too heavy.
