This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As first graders, my students are just developing as readers and deserve to have a selection of books in which each student can find something to read that they would enjoy. I will have a room of about 25 first graders with differing interests and reading levels coming from very diverse, low-income backgrounds just outside of Washington D.C. They need books in which they can identify with the main characters in addition to meeting their reading level needs. Finding books they enjoy is crucial to their developing a love of reading and learning.
My Project
These materials will help my students become introduced to a diverse set of books where students are able to relate to the books they see and continue to foster the power and love of reading. Having various genres and reading levels in my classroom library will also assist all of my students finding books that fit them best, not frustrating them because they are too easy or too difficult, but challenging and growing them as readers. Each of these books was chosen with my students' reading levels, backgrounds, and interests in mind.
As a first-year teacher, I do not have the book selection to represent the diverse group of students I will have, nor do I have the materials to make an area of our classroom a place they look forward to going to and reading a book or two.
Children love to sit in places other than their desks to read books. It is such a treat for them! I would love to give them a special place to do so. The seating, pillows, and rug will help make that possible while the bookshelf will provide a way for the children to find what they are looking for easily and keep the books in good condition.
