My students need copies of Jason Reynold's award-winning book Long Way Down, and back-to-school classroom items such as air freshener, lined paper, floor protectors, a tapestry, garland, etc.
Welcome to our English Language Arts classroom in Gwinn, MI. Our rural high school is tucked in the pines in the wild, beautiful, and remote Upper Peninsula. Despite challenges our students face with poverty (all are provided free breakfast and lunch, and some students are experiencing temporary homelessness), their determination and our dedicated staff have earned our school a bronze medal in national rankings of Best High Schools by U.S. News. Teachers here strive to provide our students with an education that prepares them for productive and fulfilling lives beyond our school walls.
My Project
A lot of people hate reading, especially a lot of boys. Author Jason Reynolds thinks that perhaps these book-hating boys really just hate reading boring books. This past spring, my students read Jason Reynold's novel Track. Let me tell you, no one in the class hated reading that book. They loved it -- girls and boys alike.
Now, I would like to complete a class set of Jason Reynolds' Long Way Down, a free verse novel.
The entire plot takes place in the span of approximately one minute, as the protagonist goes down an elevator. Long Way Down is a fast read, but it lends itself beautifully to deep classroom discussions, drawing out students with varied reading interests and abilities.
In addition to the novels, I am requesting wall art to improve the look of our classroom. Students chose a cactus tapestry and garland to hang over our new couch. We also need lined paper, air freshener, floor protectors for our chairs, and other back-to-school items for the new school year.
This project will particularly serve homeless students in my classroom because each student will have a book to use outside of the classroom. It is helpful for them to have a book as a resource to use in a homework lab class or to take with them after school. Oftentimes, these students live in a crowded space or do not have a quiet place to study. By having a book with them throughout the day, it improves the chances that they will find a time to complete their assignments, and this will hopefully alleviate some of the stress of school.
