I teach at a Title I school with nearly 80% of the population on the free or reduced lunch program and many of them are English Language Learners. Needless to say, a large number of these students have challenging home lives and they struggle with personal and academic issues.
Since most of my students don’t have access to the simplest art materials at home such as crayons, scissors, markers, they look forward to their time in art class to experience the fun and creative benefits from our various art projects.
My Project
Clay is a wonderful, natural resource that provides students sensory stimulation while helping to develop fine motor skills. Our school is very fortunate to have a pottery kiln. However, with the budget cuts as they are, we don’t have the funds to purchase clay and glazes.
I know from past years, and past pottery projects, there is something so special about a student creating a very tangible ceramic piece that they can proudly display to their family and enjoy for years to come.
It truly is a magical moment when they see their final ceramic piece. Please help us bring these wonderful projects to our well-deserving students.
