Do you remember how much patience a first grader has? We currently have one computer for our classroom. It may take a week for each child to have their turn.
My students are in a school that is 5 years old.
It is a public school in a newer area of town. The student to teacher ratio is 23:1. Although we have a new building, classroom supplies are limited because of minimal district funding for computers and such things. We have 6% African American and 18% Hispanic.
My Project
Because we only have one student computer, each student must wait their turn to have time on the computer. When it is their turn, they are excited but they have lost sight of their initial project and goal. National Common Core State Standards now require 1st graders to be able to complete one presentation for writing. The principal requires us to have students on remedial assistance programs and accelerated students on individualized paths of learning for reading and math. It is not possible to do this with only one computer per classroom. My students need 3 computers to give them ample time to work on and complete projects for the new Common Core State Standards.
It is important for my students to have fair and equitable access to a computer to complete, enrich, and assist them in their learning.
The more computers we have; the less wait time each student will have. It will keep them engaged and moving toward their final goal. As technology requirements increase each year our class will not suffer.
