This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve an exuberant, curious, affectionate group of 2nd graders. My students are growing up in abject poverty and violence. Imagine seeing drugs being sold on your way to school, yellow police tape marking off crime scenes, waking up to fend for yourself because your caregivers are either in drug induced states or not at home at all. Unfortunately, poverty is a reality for my students.
I am grateful to teach my 2nd graders because while they face unfavorable circumstances, they are resilient, full of curiosity which lends to creative learning experiences.
My Project
One major way students can be successful in the 21st century is by having access to working technology. My students need every opportunity available to prepare themselves for 2nd grade through college. Having immediate computer access will build self-esteem and independence. In addition, lessons become more colorful, creative and interactive; students engagement increases significantly leading to overall academic success. Access to technology will empower my students to take hold of their academic goals by providing hands on experience. Moreover, students will learn how to research, reinforce literacy and mathematical skills taught in class, visit different parts of the world via google earth, students can explore a plethora of ideas the possibilities are endless.
