Computers have become an integral part of our educational institutions and workplaces. Sadly, my classroom of 18 students only has 2 computers available for their use. Limited space and few electrical outlets makes a laptop the most sensible choice to meet our needs.
Our class of 18 second graders includes students who are reading and solving math problems that are above the 2nd grade level.
It is crucial that they have access to technology that will enable them to perform tasks at levels that are challenging to them. There are also students who struggle to grasp new concepts and subject matter and who would benefit from supplementary instruction that is available online. The portability of a laptop would allow individual and small groups the chance to work at tasks in learning stations without being disruptive to other students or being distracted by other activity taking place in the room.
My Project
Students who are comfortable and proficient using technology have an advantage both academically and professionally as they grow. There are often "teachable moments" involving current events that occur during a school day. Having Internet access allows students to "log-in" to what is happening in their world. There are also opportunities to compare and contrast information from a variety of sources, and having access to more computers in the classroom will allow more students to get involved when we are conducting research. A plethora of technology-based learning materials are available at no cost, and limited computer availability is the only obstacle preventing my class from taking advantage of these opportunities.
Students are motivated when learning is fun, hands-on, and challenging.
The use of a laptop will be seen by the student as a privilege. They will have the chance to pursue subjects that interest them in greater depth, and will develop technology skills that will be crucial as they progress to higher grades. The students I teach are already working at demanding tasks and striving for success each day.
