Locked Out of Learning/Lacking Laptop

My students need a laptop and four headphones in order to be able to fully benefit from our new reading program which includes online activities.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The good news is we have a new reading program. The bad news is that many of the most engaging independent activities for the program are online. We have one working laptop in the room. The online resources for this program are incredible! My students will be highly motivated by them.

My students attend a large inner city elementary school.

Most of them receive free lunch, which means their families live at or below poverty level. They are a very diverse group both ethnically and academically. Many are reading several years below grade level, while some need the challenge of above grade level work. Most of my students speak English as a second language. School is a safe, predictable environment and a welcome refuge from some of the struggles they face in their lives at home. My students love coming to school and are excited to learn new things. Sadly, due to financial constraints, there has been no investment in technology over the past few years at our level. Few of my students have access to computers at home. In school they have only limited opportunities to use technology. Most of this technology has been provided through the generosity of Donors Choose funding.

My Project

Having a laptop in my classroom would literally be life changing for my students! When my students aren't working with me or reading independently, they could be on the laptop having fun and learning valuable lessons that could help them become better readers. As second language learners my students, understandably, often have great difficulty with vocabulary, fluency and spelling. Using the program's digital activities, students could work in pairs on the laptop, hearing correct pronunciation be modeled, playing vocabulary games, and building words. Additionally, they could play interactive games to review grammar. Best of all, all the activities are able to be matched to the student's reading ability so all my students could experience success! (Struggling students and advanced students alike would be challenged, but at their level, building confidence along the way.)Finally, my students would be learning keyboarding skills and becoming more familiar with technology.

My students are eager learners who face many obstacles.

They have so little compared to their suburban peers. Many of their parents aren't familiar enough with English to support them in their learning. Most don't have the luxury of having a computer at home to learn basic computer skills or take advantage of the amazing resources it can give them access to. My students have so little and I want to make sure I am providing them with the most I can. Thank you for considering my request!
