We are an urban district, and we have over 90% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. Many students begin school with no prior education at all. Our kindergarten students are already behind when they walk in the door on their first day. We also have students who move in and out of our school frequently. Our student population grew by one hundred students just last school year. Despite the disadvantages many of my students face, they are genuinely great kids. These kids just need extra time and attention to help them make the academic gains necessary to be successful.
The most important and enjoyable part of my job is intervening with students.
Getting to know each student and what motivates them is especially important. Through my interactions with students, I have found that when they are genuinely interested in something, they will work much harder to achieve their academic goals.
My Project
My students will be participating in a living wax museum. The living wax museum is a collection of visual displays where students, dressed as famous individuals, will portray their character, while visitors walk around and tour exhibits illustrating the life of the person represented. This is why we need the series "Who is/Who was". These books are perfect for my fourth graders to use for their research. They are written in a way to keep the reader engaged. These biographies are leveled to help support all of my readers, from those that struggle to read at grade level to those that soar above and beyond.
These books are filled with fascinating tales of famous figures that will allow for my students to dive into their research and would be a great addition to our library!
My students look forward to this activity every year! They've walked through the museum as Kindergartners, First, Second, and Third graders and now it is there turn to finally be the presenters!
