My students come from many different cultural and economic backgrounds. In order to reach their goals, they have decided to attend a technical high school that emphasizes both college and career readiness, and they are excited about their futures! As an English teacher, it is exciting to see that every year my students continue to demonstrate a love for literature and reading, and I hope to continue this love with carefully chosen books, writing assignments and lively discussions so that we may all learn from each other!
My Project
Why do we read memoirs? Memoirs give students a chance to learn, to reflect, and most importantly, to empathize. In my Senior Memoir class, we read essays, poems, and books that tell the tales of men and women from all walks of life. From these works we can peel back the layers of diverse society and the experiences of those within.
As part of my memoir class students will have to option to choose a memoir they would like to read.
These books will comprise some of the options available to these kids. It is important to have a diverse range of options so that students are engaged and invested in their book. These books will help provide diversity: some describe a life of struggle, while others are more gentle and good humored. Yet while these books offer diversity, they also offer a common goal of teaching young people about the world in which they live.
