Do you enjoy curling up with a great book and getting lost in the pages? My students have found a love for reading and enjoy the time they have to read the books they have chosen, but our classroom lacks a perfect spot for the focus lessons that are essential to learning to live literate lives.
My students are bright young minds who are excited to learn and discover new things everyday.
They enjoy sitting down with the books they choose and sharing with classmates. They enter the classroom each day and do their very best with the resources that we have. Our school is one of the oldest in our district and is in desperate need of updating, but with a lack of funding and a growing student population, a face lift for the building seems almost impossible. My students overlook the stained, ragged carpet and old wobbly desks and enter the classroom every morning ready to be readers, authors, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. For some of my students, the classroom is the most stable part of their lives so it is easy to overlook it's shortcomings. The smiles on their faces when they arrive to school each morning say, "Thank you for my safe place to learn and be me."
My Project
I am requesting an easel for our classroom. An easel would serve as the focal point in our meeting area. The easel would provide a place for our class to record brilliant student thinking and new strategies that we can practice in our mission to become better readers. The easel could be used for whole group and small group instruction. It can also be used in all academic areas. Besides our minds, it would essentially be the most frequently used tool in our classroom.
This project will allow our classroom to continue fostering a love for reading.
Our goal is to become better every single day. Having an easel in the classroom allows for instruction that better fits kids and therefore gives us the best chances to become the best readers we can become.
