My students need a variety of novels focused on Latin American culture to engage them, while at the same time help with comprehension, as they delve into this new topic of study in social studies.
Students at our school stand out to new teachers every time they come into our building. Why? It is simple; we have cultivated a community of voracious readers who have to be repeatedly told to put their book away. Not only are they readers, but they are nice people, even at just the age of thirteen.
When people ask me what grade I teache and I answer, "Seventh grade!" I often get a shocked response followed by unnecessary sympathy.
What these strangers often don't have the blessing of knowing is that yes, thirteen is a tough age due to raging hormones and the need for independence, but inside all that is the budding breakthrough of a young adult. It is the perfect time to inspire someone and I am fortunate enough to have that chance. Due to the district's commitment to inclusion at the onset of public education, our students shine above others in their interaction with people who may be different than them. To me, support of others who are different says far more about a person's character than their age alone.
My Project
For years, the grade seven social studies and English departments have worked tirelessly to bridge the gap for students and provided many challenging and engaging interdisciplinary projects that have led students to positive academic growth. This fall, our social studies partners have no resources to support their brand new curriculum focused on Latin America. With the varied YA novels, we, the English teachers, can set up small book studies on a variety of different cultures. After, students can research further on their area of study and lead a presentation for the other students, thus creating a wide net of knowledge.
