The 67 sixth grade science students (45% free and reduced lunch, 24 exceptional children) will change the world. My goal is for students to understand the cause and effect relationships of the world. In these projects, students will create their own ecosystems.
In order to create the world and see the interactions, the class will need plants, various types of soil, aquatic life, amphibians, reptiles (if I can get over my fear of snakes), and food for the critters. The biospheres will be created in recycled containers to encourage re-use of materials. The nuts and bolts materials needed are exacto knives, microscope slides, agar, thermometers, slide covers, and microscopes. Additionally, I would be thrilled to have safety goggles.
These students are hands-on, experiental learners. Since 15 of these students have attention deficit disorder it is important (for my sanity and the safety of the class) to keep interest at a maximum. This project would cover a wide scope of areas: food webs, camouflage, interaction between organisms, cells, and photosynthesis, etc.
Science should be exciting. With the materials outlined, my students will be able to make connections and experience science.
