My students are enthusiastic, creative, and intelligent. These inquisitive young minds want to experience language in authentic stories, not boring worksheets.
Most of my students come from low-income homes that do not have extra money to spend on authentic children's literature or magazines.
These students yearn to have educational materials that promote learning through real life stories and current events. Story Works can provide that!
Their families have financial challenges and having magazine subscriptions coming to their home is unattainable. Students want to improve their reading skills but regular classroom textbooks are boring and repetitive. Young students don't want to take textbooks home but they would love having a Story Works magazine! This is possible with your help.
My Project
One area my students struggle the most with is reading and comprehension. Having taught in ESL classrooms, I know first hand how difficult it is for my struggling students to comprehend a new skill and having the confidence to speak about it to native peers. I'm requesting the Scholastic Story Works magazine to bring current topics and lessons into the classroom. These magazines provide brilliant illustrations that will help my general education, ESL and special education population comprehend language art's lessons.
In my classroom, we practice reading, comprehension, listening and speaking daily using real pictures and stories.
The addition of this magazine would give my students a much needed boost of practice in the areas of reading, listening, comprehension and speaking. Students who are confident in their these abilities will be ready to face the challenges of higher education and the workplace.
