Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher of 28 years, but moved down from fifth to third grade. I have been overjoyed to work with this caring, loving, and enthusiastic group of students. Their backgrounds and abilities vary widely. We are a K-8 school where community is taught and instilled in all grade levels.
Third graders possess a magical fascination with all possibilities, and they are eager to succeed and take chances.
My students have the natural love of learning about the world, sharing ideas, and gathering knowledge. Over half of my students are performing below grade level, and struggle with ADD, ADHD, grief, and learning disabilities. Many come to school with worries and anxiety, and many struggle to fit in. The classroom is where they come to embrace learning. I want all my students to feel welcome and accepted in our classroom.
My Project
Using these innovative materials, I plan to incorporate children's love of STEM, coding, character building, and project-based learning into the curriculum. Students will use iPads to build on knowledge and reinforce new concepts in all curricular areas. They will be able to connect with their learning experiences in ways that are not possible with textbooks or lectures. Daily use of iPads will allow more students to grasp new concepts with numerous free programs that teach each student at their level.
The curriculum and many of my lessons will be enriched and enhanced by programs and tools only available through these engaging and tactile resources.
The iPads are also needed to use Osmo Coding, Genius, and Mind Racers. The coding kits are perfect for problem-solving, logic, collaboration, and project design. Using Osmo as a learning station, students will increase creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills as they work together towards an outcome. We will begin coding with small groups, and as students become more skilled, they will work in teams for more advanced challenges.
Even reluctant learners come alive when we are doing STEM or science activities. I currently purchase all STEM and NGSS science materials with my own money. K'NEX Education STEM, magnetic building blocks, and gravity maze will provide a constant source of challenging STEM activities, allowing students to create and design.
Many of my students suffer from anxiety, grief, ADHD, learning disabilities, and a stressful home life. The books and mindfulness activities will help us get centered, be still, and know we are enough. We create space each day for mindfulness and compassion for others. The fidget objects and playfoam will be added to our tactile box. Taking control of their anxiety or ADHD with manipulatives gives kids a chance to be successful and more focused in school.
