My students need the clipboards for small group activities. The games and flashcards will help students with limited vocabulary, and the portable Insignia DVD players will help students that miss video clips when they are absent.
A large portion of Wilson's 7th and 8th grade population consists of students who receive free or reduced services and are considered at-risk. 45% of the student body are a minority race with 59% of all students are considered economically disadvantaged. 14% are limited English proficient.
Wilson is known as a trauma-sensitive school due to the number of students dealing with some form of abuse.
These are the years when several students speak up, usually for the first time, about their abuse, thus making school the last thing on their mind.
Several of the shelters in our community are in our attendance area, making Wilson a very transient school. These students have several large gaps in their learning because it.
My Project
The teacher resources, such as "Inquiry-Based Lessons in US" have already created lessons and creative strategies to get students excited about learning history. "A History Teaching Toolbox" is full of higher level thinking activities to get the students to stretch their brains.
The Insignia portable DVD players will allow students to go on virtual field trips and catch up on any video clips they missed when absent.
The flashcards and memory game will support students who may not be low readers, but have limited English vocabulary. The illustrations used on the flashcards are the most recognizable for the event. The D-Day game will reinforce strategies the troops used, along with names of important battles and places
