My students do not just read about history in a textbook, they bring it to life!
I teach in a Title I school in a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
We are on the "smaller" side for our district, so we strive to create a tight-knit community of learners. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and each contribute something unique to our classrooms.
My Project
One of the goals in my classroom is to bring history to life. I strive to do this by creating various historical simulations for my students to participate in. From a mock-trial of the Boston Massacre, to having our own Boston Tea Party, history is anything but boring in my classroom. I am requesting various props and materials to make my lessons more interactive and engaging. I am requesting several colonial costumes so that the students can see examples of colonial dress. Additionally, the British soldier red coat(as well as crime scene tape) will also be used in the Boston Massacre crime scene simulation. I am requesting a gavel and a podium for our Boston Massacre trial. These items will also be used when we participate in our debate for independence. Additionally, I am asking for two authentic colonial lanterns(to be used in a simulation of Revere's Midnight Ride) and an English flag to be hung in the classroom during our lessons on the colonial period, prior to the Revolution.
Too often, students find history mundane and boring.
They don't see why they should care about events that happened so long ago. Through interactive simulations, student see history as something alive. Something that is engaging and interesting, not just something they have to read about in a textbook.
