Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Most of my students had not been out of the state of Louisiana until they left for Texas during Hurricane Katrina! As a Social Studies and Science teacher at a charter school in a high-need community, I am attempting to do all that I can to expose my students to the wonders of the world.

Since the Hurricane, many have returned, all lacking the geographic travel experience that a young person deserves. Inspiring the minds of my fourth graders during geography lessons is especially difficult with our schools lack of resources and materials. I believe it is important to expose students to the beauty of geography and the natural wonders of our (ever-changing) world.

To reach these very visual and kinesthetic learners, I would like to incorporate more interactive tools and materials into our geography and history lessons. With a large globe-carpet, students may physically walk from one continent to another, getting a sense of where they are in the world. With other highly visual geography and culture-based books and materials, my students will begin to comprehend the diversity of our planet- which I believe to be extremely important in an increasingly globalized world.

Your support will ensure that underprivileged and under-served students from New Orleans get the opportunity to travel the globe in their 4th grade classroom. You can make the difference, by inspiring future travelers and global citizens!
