Living American Biographies: Past & Present

My students need costumes from different periods of American history so they can participate in living biographies which is part of performing arts Disney Grant.

My Students

The one thing my students use to remember the most every year was performing in plays. Unfortunately performing arts is not a priority in schools today; however, I would like to change that. I want to give the students at my school an opportunity to shine on stage just like they do at Disneyland.

The students at my school are absolutely wonderful.

They are hard working and don't give up even when life is bleak. Many of my students get free & reduced lunch and live in small apartments with several families. They have not had the opportunities to take extra-curricular classes like a lot of children their age. One thing that my students always ask for is to do more performing arts. They love going on stage and acting. It is one of their favorite things to do which makes it a great motivator as a teacher. The students at my school will work before school, through lunch, and after school because they love drama so much. I just want to give my students the chance to perform, in costumes, and on a stage.

My Project

My students study American history from the early Native Americans to the Civil War. We are going to do a Project-Based Lesson- which includes critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. The students will research an important person in American history with a partner. They will then write a script about that person's accomplishments and what that person would be like in present times (would they still be famous, what will they be known for,...) Then the partners will present their findings on stage in a first person monologue. They will wear costumes and pretend to be their historical figures for the class. One will be the historical person in the past and the other student will be the historical person if they lived in present times. We will invite other classes to our performances as well as parents.

Donations are essential for this project as the students and the school do not have the means to buy costumes.

This might be the only time these students get the opportunity to perform, in costume, and on stage in front of their peers and family members. Donating to this project will not only help the students' public speaking skills, it will also be wonderful for their self-esteems. Perhaps one of these students will find their future career in performing arts.
