My students need hands-on literary activities, including a listening center, CD Read-Alongs and rubber stamps.
Can you recall the moment when you were able to read and write by yourself? I bet you felt like a big boy/girl! I want my students to experience that feeling of independence where they no longer need anyone to read or write for them. Wow, what a sense of accomplishment!
The test scores in literacy for social-economic disadvantaged children continue to decline.
Literary success for these children begin in kindergarten. Kindergartners need kinesthetic resources to help with comprehension of skills. Every year, the budget for education is cut, and the students suffer. Students who are from this poor, urban community are at an academic disadvantage in literacy because the necessary resources to become successful are limited. However, when teachers like me tell them that they can do whatever they want, they believe it. These children persevere, despite their home situations. Two years ago, the school was a STAR school, but now, we are on academic watch. We, including the students, are striving to change the school's status and show the State of Mississippi that children from schools in poor areas can and will excel.
The requested resources will change the lives of every child because the materials will capture the students' attention by using music. Music is the only tool that does not require permission from the brain to make meaningful. With fun lyrics and catchy beats, my students will remember concepts that would otherwise be meaningless. Also, little children love stickers and stamps. I want to "tap into" my students' interests to teach them and return the love of learning to children. Students who are actively engaged use mostly all 5 senses to learn, and their need to misbehave will decrease because their attentions are captured by activities that are fun and interesting.
The State of Mississippi is on the bottom in education, but we are on the top for cutting funds for education.
With caring donors like y'all, this will be the generation that will elevate the state academically. Most importantly, children from this academically disadvantaged community will make a bold statement to the society who builds more jails for them than fund resources for school. The statement: "We believed, and we achieved SUCCESS!
