Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it takes for kids to learn, stay focused and engaged, but have fun at the same time? My students learn best from being highly engaged with hands-on activities and games. They absolutely love playing educational, engaging games during the CLP block.
My students are very caring, respectful students. They work hard everyday and strive to do better by completing additional assignments and projects.
My students come from ethnic backgrounds such as Hispanic, Mexican, African American, Caucasian, and Puerto Rican. All of my students are free lunch recipients. One of my students is homeless. She and her 4 four siblings and mother are in a homeless shelter. There are 900 students in our school. We are a public school in Milwaukee that is also a DIFI school. Our school is predominantly Hispanic/Puerto Rican, with many bilingual students. Some parents and students speak no English at all.
My Project
My students need a variety of literacy/phonics games, which also accommodate their varying abilities, to play during our CLP block. My students learn better with having hands-on activities and games. They remain fully engaged and show excitement and enthusiasm during the CLP block when they are able to work cooperatively with a partner or their group playing these educational games and activities. The level of motivation and enthusiasm tends to decrease when they are only given "busy seat work" to complete. When they are given various games and activities to play, this level of motivation and enthusiasm greatly increases. The best part is, they are learning!
Face it, we all love to play games and have fun with our friends.
It's not all just for kids! We all sometimes need a break from the pencil and paper learning. What better way to do this than by playing games with your friends? These aren't just any games. Instead, they are engaging, educational games in which the students work cooperatively with their groups/partners. They focus on various reading strategies as well as phonics/phonemic awareness. Best part--they're learning!
