Lively Literacy Learning Through Play!

Help me give my students literacy centers to make reading, spelling, and phonics development a fun and rewarding experience. These materials would greatly enhance my students' learning as they learn through play.

My Students

I have a classroom full of vibrantly fun and fascinating first graders! The students in my classroom come from a variety of backgrounds. Nearly one-fourth of my students are ESL students (English as a Second Language). We live in a rural, farming/ranching community in the Panhandle of Oklahoma. In the past five years, our community has experienced one of the worst wildfires in our history, horrific ice storms, long droughts, and a loss of jobs and income. Additionally, COVID-19 caused our school to be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Since then, we have had to adjust teaching to meet the needs of our students who experience quarantines and distance learning. These hardships have affected our students in many ways. With that being said, we are a strong community that believes that education is essential and key to building and sustaining a lively and successful area for current and future generations. My first graders are resilient, enthusiastic, hardworking, and vivacious. Their love for learning inspires me daily to provide them with the best education possible. Investing in my students is an unwavering commitment that I believe will reap the most amazing rewards for years to come.

My Project

Reading is a fundamental skill in first grade. In my classroom I provide my students with the necessary foundation in phonics, reading, and literacy instruction that all grades thereafter will build upon. I would love to have some fun literacy center resources to help me foster this goal. If you were to observe my classroom, you would find students working at many different levels. I differentiate reading, phonics, and spelling lessons to meet my students' needs. All of my students work on a level that is tailored to his or her needs. In essence, I have students acquiring skills below their grade level to close achievement gaps, and students working as many as two grades above current grade placement to continue academic growth. Additionally, I provide a minimum of 120 minutes per week of individualized tutoring before school starts to all students who are not performing at their current grade level.

The manipulatives I am asking for will make learning hands-on, applicable, and most of all fun for my students.

My classroom would greatly benefit from additional resources to use in reading and literacy centers to improve instruction. These materials would allow my students to gain a deeper understanding of reading, phonics, and spelling as we focus on learning skills taught in class.

Each of the centers I have selected gives students the opportunity to use a hands-on approach to acquiring necessary literacy skills. These centers can be used individually or in small groups. They will allow me additional avenues of reteaching moments and providing RTl for students. I truly believe that this will assist them in mastering crucial components in reading. This will improve students' confidence and success with literacy skills. I would sincerely appreciate your support in helping me acquire these items for my classroom.
